GARRETT FIGURED BRIANNA needed an out. He gave her one. Pretending to be together had been as natural as waking in the morning. So, why didn’t he want to get out of bed?

Figuratively, of course. But then, literally didn’t sound so bad to him right now either.

All that talk about babies earlier should have sleeping with Brianna at the bottom of his list. He suppressed a smile. There wasn’t much that could manage that feat.

Brianna cleared her throat. “Yeah. I’m ready when you are.”

He reached for her hand and then linked their fingers.

“See you in class,” Brianna said to the person she’d been talking to. He’d realized the second she’d disappeared from behind him earlier. Keeping her in his peripheral, he saw her talking to an employee.

“On Thursday.” The worker broke off her stare before moving to the monitor and refocusing her attention there.

“Who was that?” he asked as soon as they stepped outside.

“Someone from class,” Brianna said. “How’d you do, by the way?”

“Struck out,” he admitted.

“Well then I’m glad I saw my classmate.” She practically beamed.

“What did you get?”

“A cell phone number,” she said. “Which will allow us to do a reverse phone lookup.”

He was familiar with a website that offered the service for a small fee. “We can get his address if we’re lucky.”

“That’s right,” she said.

“Do I want to know why you know about this?” he asked.

“Probably not,” she hedged. “Nothing illegal, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“Nope. I didn’t figure you for the type to break the law,” he said.

“Before you nominate me for sainthood, you should know that I fudged the truth back there. I feel terrible about it too.” Her shoulders drooped with the admission.

Her honesty was one of her many admirable traits.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Bri.” He caught himself right there. The term of endearment had no place in their relationship. He used to call her that when they were a couple. “Look, Brianna, you’re trying to save your life. This isn’t a game. If you had to stretch the truth to get information, it’s what you had to do. Doesn’t make you a bad person.”

“No?” There was a look of hurt in her eyes when she caught his gaze again. She dropped his hand and picked up the pace toward his truck.

He wasn’t quite ready to leave yet but by the looks of her, she was done with campus for the day. A question loomed like a heavy cloud. Why did the air between them suddenly turn so cold? He was trying to give her an out, reassure her that she wasn’t the worst possible person on the planet like she was trying to convince herself. How had his plan backfired?

“What did I do, Brianna? What did I say that was so wrong?” he asked.

Her hand was on the door handle of the passenger side by the time he caught up to her.

“Seriously. Tell me because I have no idea and the last thing I want to do is hurt you,” he said.
